Khazimula Children’s Project began with a simple act of compassion when Joanne encountered a group of homeless children in need of shelter and care. What started as a modest effort to provide safety and meals — with support from a local tearoom owner who donated leftover food — has since grown into a life-changing refuge for vulnerable children.
Today, the organization operates from a converted schoolhouse that serves as a loving home for 30 children ages 6–18 who come from unstable and at-risk environments. Supported by a dedicated staff and compassionate volunteers, Khazimula provides not only shelter and nourishment, but also stability, guidance, and hope for a brighter future.
HOKISA (Homes for Kids in South Africa) is dedicated to providing loving, full-time family care for children living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. When children can no longer be safely cared for by relatives or community members, they are placed at the HOKISA Home through the Magistrate’s Court following a careful assessment of their individual needs and circumstances. Whenever possible, families are encouraged to remain involved in the child’s life.
The home provides care for up to twenty children, many of whom arrive critically ill and in urgent need of medical attention, stability, and emotional support. Through the compassion of dedicated staff and volunteers, these children are given the opportunity to heal, grow stronger, and experience the security of a nurturing family environment. In addition to ongoing medical care, HOKISA also supports each child’s developmental, educational, and emotional needs while striving toward family reunification whenever possible.
Midlands Hospice partners with TIAS ARMS to provide critical care and support for children living with HIV/AIDS. Through this partnership, TIAS ARMS helps fund a dedicated Child Care Worker who regularly visits children to monitor their health, ensure treatment compliance, and provide ongoing encouragement and support to both the children and their families.
Recognizing the severe physical toll HIV/AIDS can take on the body, TIAS ARMS also provides high-calorie food parcels every two weeks to help combat malnutrition and weight loss associated with the illness. In addition, funding was provided for a medical scale so each child’s weight and overall health can be carefully monitored on a monthly basis.
This comprehensive approach — combining compassionate care, nutritional support, and consistent health monitoring — plays a vital role in improving the well-being and long-term survival of these vulnerable children.
GAPA (Grandmothers Against Poverty and AIDS) is a compassionate community-based organization dedicated to supporting grandmothers who have become the primary caregivers for children affected by poverty, HIV/AIDS, and family loss. In many cases, these women have stepped in to raise their grandchildren after parents have passed away or are unable to provide care due to illness, addiction, or extreme hardship.
Through emotional support, practical resources, nutritional assistance, and community programs, GAPA empowers these caregivers to provide stable, loving homes for vulnerable children. The organization not only addresses immediate physical needs, but also helps restore dignity, hope, and a sense of community for families facing overwhelming challenges.
St. Joseph Preschool is an outreach ministry dedicated to providing quality early childhood education and primary school preparation for low-income children in one of South Africa’s highest “at-risk” regions. Serving children ages 3–6 from all backgrounds and faiths, the school supports many who face difficult circumstances, including poverty, neglect, hunger, orphanhood, and unstable home environments.
TIAS ARMS partners with the preschool by helping fund tuition assistance and providing meals before and after school for children who often arrive without food. Together, they are creating a safe, nurturing environment where children can learn, grow, and build a brighter future.
Never Neverland School serves more than 70 preschool children in a poverty-stricken community between Durban and Johannesburg, many of whom have been impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. TIAS ARMS supports the school by funding nutritious meals, providing essential resources such as refrigeration for food storage, and helping expand staffing and educational materials.
These efforts have strengthened the children’s learning environment and better prepared them for elementary school, particularly in language and math skills. TIAS ARMS has also funded community seminars to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and support children and families affected by the disease.
Waves for Change (W4C) provides child friendly mental health services in communities where mental health services are under-resourced and stigmatized. Steadily growing their presence across South Africa, W4C had engaged 321 households in 2016, giving those children counseling which, in turn, helped the children feel happier and more confident. Teachers reported better behavior in school. TIAS ARMS welcomes W4C in our first year of support. TIAS ARMS has given funds specifically to provide a haven for girls. Girls are victimized at a high rate in South Africa and our funds allow them to go to and from the W4C locations safely. We look forward to reporting on the success of our help.
